It's been in the works for over a year now....the need for my brother and sister-in-law's garden to experience a hosta takeover. Last Thursday I began the digging out process. With the lovely exception of an hour-long phone call from my favorite cousin, I spent the better part of an afternoon with shovel in hand. Phew!
Seven varieties should give them a good start, leaves ranging from the size of nickels to elephant ears; including a palette of grey/green to lime green to green/white to yellow. (I'm throwing in some trumpet vine, ferns, and lily-of-the-valley as well; just for good measure!)
I am thankful for people whose job it is to develop new, unusual, & visually appealing hosta varieties--I occasionally purchase one of these. But I always feel a bit awkward about it--who buys hostas? Really, isn't it sort of pathetic if you have to actually go out and purchase a hosta? Doesn't that mean you don't have any friends? They're the easiest plant in the world to share! (Just give me a call-- we'll swap!)
I talked to brother last night. All the hostas are planted, albeit in a rather haphazard, temporary setting---until he gets some other dirt moved, for what will be part of a new entrance or something to that effect. He always has 100 projects going at once! Make that a 101!!
